Sweat in the Womb (Temazcal)

Sweating in the Womb

(Minimum 6 people per session)

Full Details:

What: Temazcal (tema:s’kal:i) means “bath house” in Nahautl and is the Mesoamerican sweatlodge. This session is for groups only where guests are invited to join us in a traditional sauna ceremony. The purpose of the ceremony is to come together and within the adobe and brick walls of the temazcal, heal personal, familial, and cultural issues facing guests and the world at large.

Price (per person): $600MXN (includes transportation to/from Oaxaca City, water, temazcal, light lunch)

When: Upon Request, Reservations Required

Where: We will meet in Oaxaca City where we will take private transportation to San Pablo Huitzo, a small community on the outskirts of Oaxaca’s central valleys for the temazcal ceremony. We will have lunch there and take private transportation back to Oaxaca City.

How: Sitting, mostly. Between the transportation, the instruction, the temazcal, and the lunch, the session will have us mostly sitting. Please bring light clothing to wear inside the temazcal (no denim, or metal of any kind), a change of underwear or clothing for afterwards, a towel, and reusable water bottle if you have one.

Payment: All reservations incur a non-refundable 50% deposit. We can meet you in Oaxaca City for the deposit upon confirmation of reservation. The remaining payment due is collected at the beginning of the session. We only accept cash in Mexican pesos.

Dietary Restrictions: Oaxaca is a very difficult place for people with severe allergies or dietary restrictions. Please advise us in advance of any restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate our guests. The light meal is most often a local, organic meat soup, accompanied by tortillas and fruit water. Unfortunately we cannot make exceptions for dietary choices, unless the whole group agrees to the choice in question.

Medical Issues: We do not have adequate medical training. If you have a medical condition or carry medicines/tools with you, please advise us in advance. We will do our best to help in whatever way we can, but we are not responsible for your health. Know your body. Know your requirements. Please, inform us of your issues.

A strong threshold for heat is highly recommended, whereas those with a history of claustrophobia or breathing problems might have difficulty enduring the duration of the sweat. Guests are welcome to exit the temazcal if they feel they need to.
