Discover the Deep Heart, Hearth, and Craft of Oaxacan Pottery Traditions


The Session:

As you may know, Oaxaca is famous for its pottery traditions. However, much of the rooted, Oaxacan pottery traditions, both technical and philosophical, are being neglected, even forgotten. Over the course of a full day we will visit a family of three generations of potters actively engaged in the collective remembrance of their craft.

We will explore the process of turning clay into ceramics, each step being undertaken and taught together. Moreover, we will be getting our hands dirty learning the living alchemy of earth and fire, listening to master storytellers, and discovering the old relationships between the fire that cooks our pottery that cooks our food.

Earth, Fire, and Food includes:

– a day-long, hands-on workshop of the Oaxacan pottery-making process, from the raw materials in the Earth to the mixing, sculpting, and firing, to the finished product in the workshop
– an interactive, metate-made Oaxacan chocolate demonstration and tasting
– a delicious, organic, home-cooked meal with our hosts
– a parting gift for our guests from our hosts, selected especially for this session

When: Saturdays – 9am-4pm – Upon Request & Reservations Required

Where: Santa Maria Atzompa.

How: Driving. We will leave and return to Oaxaca City by car or van. We will be inside for the most part, but outside for a time in the morning. Please dress for impending weather. Bring a hat or sunglasses, and be prepared to walk and learn.

Important: This is a very rare and sensitive invitation. Therefore, we invite guests to proceed with respect for the traditions and hospitality of our hosts. As a result, this includes no photography or audio-visual recording of any kind. Guests are welcome to bring a pen and paper to take notes on. Likewise, There will be an opportunity for a group photo at the end of each session.

Dietary Restrictions:

To begin, Oaxaca can be a difficult place for people with severe allergies or dietary restrictions. Therefore, please advise us in advance of any restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate our guests. This session’s meals can be prepared vegetarian, if we are given due notice. As a result, severe allergies most likely cannot be accommodated for this class. For vegans or those with any other strict restrictions, we invite you to bring along a meal in a container. In addition, we would be able to store and heat it for you, if needed.

Medical Issues:

First and foremost, we do not have adequate medical training. Therefore, if you have a medical condition or carry medicines/tools with you, please advise us in advance. We will do our best to help in whatever way we can. However, we are not responsible for your health. Know your body. Know your requirements. Please, inform us of your issues.

All cancellations must be made in writing, via email at least 48 hours before the session, otherwise you forfeit payment guaranteed at that point for our staff and hosts. Therefore, there are no refunds for cancellations. However, if the reservation is cancelled with more than 48 hours written notice, we can re-schedule your booking for a date within one calendar year in which our hosts/session animators are all available to work and the minimum number of guests is already met. Each of our sessions/tastings requires a minimum number of guests in order to proceed. If you book with us and we do not have the required number of guests, we do reserve the right to cancel your session, wherein your payment will be refunded in full.
