Description

Blood of the Gods: Ceremony in the Sierra Norte

The Session:

Oaxaca state has over 30 ceremonial cacao drinks, each unique to a specific village. Over the course of a full day we will climb up into the fertile mountains (2600+ meters) to experience one of these beautiful, mysterious, and delicious drinks. We endeavour to learn about a traditional corn/maize and cacao ceremony that challenges our ideas of what ceremony is, and how it informs us of who we are.

The session consists of:

– an invitation to join a local family and tour their land which includes their milpa, mushroom cultivation, apple orchard, adobe cabins,
– a full, extended workshop, and demonstration of the drink-making process,
– a delicious, organic, home-cooked meal,
and of course the opportunity to taste one of Oaxaca’s rare ceremonial cacao drinks.

Key Details:

When: Upon Request (Saturdays excluded), Reservations Required

Where: Deep in the heart of the Sierra Norte’s Pueblos Mancomunados.

How: Driving. We will leave and return to Oaxaca City by car or van. We will be mostly sheltered, but rain visits these places daily, so dress appropriately.

Language(s): English only.

Important: This is a very rare and sensitive invitation, so we invite guests to proceed with respect for the traditions, and this includes no photography or recording of any kind. Please note, this is not a shamanic cacao ceremony.

Dietary Restrictions:

To begin, Oaxaca can be a difficult place for people with severe allergies or dietary restrictions. Therefore, please advise us in advance of any restrictions and we will do our best to accommodate our guests. This session’s meals can be prepared vegetarian, if we are given due notice. As a result, severe allergies most likely cannot be accommodated for this class. For vegans or those with any other strict restrictions, we invite you to bring along a meal in a container. In addition, we would be able to store and heat it for you, if needed.

Medical Issues:

First and foremost, we do not have adequate medical training. Therefore, if you have a medical condition or carry medicines/tools with you, please advise us in advance. We will do our best to help in whatever way we can. However, we are not responsible for your health. Know your body. Know your requirements. Please, inform us of your issues.
